Japan-based Midori Auto Leather broke ground in recent days to build its third plant in San Luis Potosi. The company plans to invest around US$ 26 million and hire some 1,100 workers to manufacture leather products for automotive applications.

Takashi Akaji, Director for the Company in Mexico, said Midori opted for Mexico over China to expand its footprint.

Midori currently employs 2,100 workers in its Mexican facilities to supply seat covers and steering wheels for automakers such as Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru y Nissan. GM, VW and Fiat Chrysler are also part of Midori’s customers, but those OEMs are supplied from other facilities.

The company expects its workforce to reach up to 4,000 employees over the next years as product demand increases.
